Show Statement:

Shades of Gray: Drawings in Graphite presents the work of seven artists from Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, and Washington, DC while exploring a variety of ways that graphite is used by contemporary artists.

In the past, graphite was relegated to use as a medium for preparatory studies that would later be reworked into more finished work in other media. However, due to a renewed interested in drawing among contemporary artists, it is no longer only a means to an end. The use of graphite provides a surprisingly common ground for the realization of each artist’s vision despite such diverse inspiration sources as architecture, contradiction, filtered memories, irony, isolation, obsession, phobias, scale, scientific inquiry, and social consciousness.

Andrew Glenn in Moberly, Mo

Printmaker and teacher Andrew Glenn has a show, entitled Standardized Diversity, up at Moberly Area Community College in Moberly, Missouri through December 3. I visited the show last week and enjoyed a number of the works. Below are a few images from the show. You can find out more here.

Andrew is a fellow MFA graduate from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. He was there studying Printmaking while I was working on a Painting degree. It’s always nice to see a fellow IU grad continuing to work and make a path in the world. My best to Andrew and his family!

Color Drawing, Spring 2010

A year ago I started teaching all levels of Color Drawing (Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced) at the University of Missouri. While I really enjoy all of my classes, the Color Drawing sections have been particularly special to me.

So here’s just a review of some of the great work from this semester…

I want to thank all of my Color Drawing students for making the class so enjoyable. I could have easily had 100 drawings to show from the production of my 24 students; I don’t mean any disrespect to those I’ve not displayed here. These works do show the overall quality and worth ethic I’ve seen throughout all of the students this semester. I’m so glad I got to work with them. Here’s to setting the bar high for next semester!
